Dental implants are tooth root replacements. These implants provide a firm foundation to the existing tooth structure. These implants have many advantages namely improves speech, more comfort etc. Dental implants have relatively high success rates if they are of good quality.
Dental implant procedures are mostly done under local anesthesia. Placing dental implants is commonly performed through a 3 staged process. In the first process, the implant flush is surgically buried with the bone, underneath the gum. Such a process shall facilitate in a more proper healing process. However, the implant has to be exposed surgically after the healing process. The surgeon then checks whether the implant have been successfully integrated or not. He then connects a sort of post that penetrated into the mouth through the gum. The process is referred to as abutment. Different forms of abutment exist in market. For preparing for the final restorative stage, the dentist uses a cuff through which the dentist accesses the implant. The abutment can be placed at the same time of placing the implant. The method is advantageous over the fact that there is no need of a second surgery. However, healing time should be sufficient in this process also. During the healing time, the abutments must be protected from chewing forces.
This surgery can also be performed in a single stage. In this surgery, a one-piece implant is placed so that its metal collar protrudes through the gum. After the healing, the abutment can be properly connected to the implant. The crown can then be fabricated to replace the missing tooth. The success rates of both these surgeries are almost the same.
There are many advantages of dental implants over the traditional bridges. A single tooth is replaced by an implant without sacrificing the heath of nearby teeth. In contrast, other procedures affect the neighboring teeth also. Since the tooth root is also preserved using implants, preservation of the bone is much better. Some of the other advantages of implants over traditional bridge include the following:
